Let’s talk laundry and sustainability!
Content Summary

Laundry by itself is such a chore that the less you think about it the better, you say. Well, not really.

Every load you wash could be working against the environment and you don’t want that, do you? After all, we all need to do our bit to help the planet.

But hey, you can’t do without washing your clothes − so what’s the best way forward? All these questions could make your head feel like a spin cycle!

Being aware of what’s eco-unfriendly is a good start. And you’ll be surprised at how much we’ve taken for granted as we load the machine and dial up the settings.

Here’s are some shockers and “did you knows” that could make you reexamine what you’ve been doing…

Did you know that an average load of washing at home uses 70 litres of water?
Content Summary

That’s around 10 average buckets of water. For one single basket of laundry. So, if every home draws this much water on every load, day in and day out, you can do the math.

The water is also not reused at all, so it just goes down the drain. Water waste − sounds more like what-a-waste, doesn’t it? How can this be avoided. Well, read on.

Did you know that the dryer is the second highest energy guzzler in the home?
Content Summary

Let’s think of what we mindlessly switch on, even on sunny, airy days. The dryer. If ever there was an energy-sucking appliance, this would be it. It’s one greedy machine that does less of a job than the sun and the wind.

But on rainy days, you are pretty much helpless. Or are you? Don’t take your eyes off till the last word in this piece.

Did you know that the temperature of water we set increases energy waste?
Content Summary

75% of energy used for laundry goes to heating the water to the temperature of your choice. Again, something easily avoided, no?

Shorter cycles with cold water reduce a significant amount of carbon footprint. Now that’s a handy bit of information. And there’s more, so keep going…

Did you know you could even save the energy used by the iron?
Content Summary

By immediately hanging the clothes out, you could prevent a lot of wrinkles that would otherwise need a longer ironing process. Yes, we know.

The detangling drives you crazy. The clothes don’t hang themselves. The clothes pegs are never to be found. Here’s a news flash. Answers can be found. Right at the end of this blog.

Did you know that fast fashion is working against the planet?
Content Summary

The increase in use-and-throw fashion has led to an immense amount of landfill waste that isn’t all biodegradable because of the mix of materials.

Fast fashion also does not lend itself to frequent washing and therefore needs to be replaced, resulting in more non-biodegradable wear getting into homes and finally ending up as attire that can’t be recycled, reused or upcycled. But hey, there’s light at the end of this article.

Did you know that fuller loads can help save resources?
Content Summary

Finally, the one upside to you postponing the laundry till it all piles up! Fuller loads are recommended because more clothes get washed for the amount of water drawn in – and the clothes don’t stick to the side of the drum either.

But do you really like a cluttered home and an overflowing laundry basket as part of the décor? If you don’t want to be short of socks or a formal shirt at the last minute, keep your eyes fixed right here.

Title Content
Did you know front-loaders are more ecofriendly than top-loaders?
Content Summary

Yes, front-loading machines are more expensive, yet they use less water than the top loading ones. So, if you have a top-loading machine, you are more ecounfriendly than, say, your neighbour or your colleague or your friend.

Now what’s to be done? For starters, find another solution by reading further.

Did you know clothes shed microfibres that finally get into the sea or soil?
Content Summary

Microfibres are tiny plastic particles from synthetic clothes that don’t get filtered during the average wash, so they land up in our oceans or in the soil making them toxic in the long run.

Filters to catch these microfibres are an option – but is that really what you bargained for? Now you have to think on behalf of the machine? Relax. You’re so close to the finish line.
